In 2008, we wanted to start a new Metallica website that would feature all the latest and greatest news pertaining to the best band in the galaxy. Unveiling Absolute Metallica right before the release of the band's newest album seemed like the right thing to do, and at the right time. Unfortunately, we were felled prematurely by circumstances beyond our control. Let's just say that we were hit by not only pestilance, but time and famine - ie. a complete clusterfuck of situations that derailed the site and it's upkeep. But now that's over. As Metallica tours the hell out of Europe, we're back, reinvigorated and ready to rock!

8-1-08: DEATH MAGENTIC RELEASE DATE

The above has been posted on Metallica.com, making it official. Death Magnetic will be released on September 12th, 2008. Sources indicate that the "Worldwide" moniker most likely indicates that the album will be available as a digital download on that date, and/or if you order the album through Metallica.com or Mission Metallica that it will be delivered on that date. The availability of the album through your local record store may vary by a few days before or after 9-12-08. The best way to figure out when it'll be available through the local route would be to ask your local record store - or better yet, just order it through Mission Metallica!

7-31-08: "THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES" VIDEO

Metallica spent July 31st, 2008 at an undisclosed location in the California desert shooting the video for the first single from their upcoming album, Death Magnetic. The video for The Day that Never Comes was directed by Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterburg, (pictured with the band in the fourth picture down). A fantastic interview James did with Turkey's 24 hour news channel, NTV, has been posted, in which Hetfield discusses the angles and direction of the new album, Death Magnetic, as well as some insight as to the after effects of Some Kind of Monster. The Mighty Hetfield turns 45 on August 1st, 2008.

6-25-08: METALLICA TO APPEAR ON MAIDEN TRIBUTE

Metallica.com announced today that Metallica has recorded a track for the upcoming "Maiden Heaven" Iron Maiden tribute album, to be released exclusively by Kerrang! Magazine.

"Iron Maiden are 10% cooler than ever other band..." Lars Ulrich commented.

Metallica has covered "Remember Tomorrow" for the tribute album. The band recorded the tune in May, during their final weeks of recording their latest album, "Death Magnetic", (due out in September).

"Maiden Heaven" will be released on July 16th. For a full list of bands and the tunes they've turned in, head to the news release at Metallica.com or the offical Kerrang! website.

A number of fans have emailed us complaining that the main page at Mission Metallica wasn't accepting their user names and passwords, even after they've signed up.

We've recognized the problem, and came up with this solution:

(1) Go to Mission Metallica

(2) In the upper righthand corner, click the "Forgot Password?" link

(3) On the new page that opens up, above the box where you can enter your username/email address, there's a link that says "LOG IN". Click that.

(4) You should now be able to log in with the new username and password boxes provided.

6-13-08: DIE ELECTRIC? NOT SO MUCH

The unknown image has changed yet again...

So, we can probably rule out the whole Die Electric rumor, (there was a rumor that Die Electric would be the name of the first single from the new Metallica album, and that was what was being spelled out...).

So what is it? It could still be forming the name of the first single, or it could be the name of the album, or...??

6-13-08: RS ARTICLE - STILL HEAVY...

A new article by David Fricke entitled Metallica: Still Heavy After All These Years has been posted at Rolling Stone.com.

In the article, Fricke looks at how the new album has developed, including comments from James Hetfield and producer Rick Rubin - in fact much of the article centers on how Rubin has helped shape the band's new album, which is due out in September.

6-12-08: NEW COVER? UNKNOWN IMAGES EXPLAINED?

The strange, unknown image that was posted on Metallica's website on June 9th has gotten stranger over the last few days.

On June 11th, it changed to this:

And on the 12th it changed to this...

So what's the deal? Speculation ran rampant almost immediately that the image was somehow connected to the new album cover. Another thought was that the "D" and "C" that the "magnets" seemed to make in the original, June 9th image in fact stood for "Dot Com" and this would be the primary new logo for Metallica's website.

Now a new rumor has surfaced - and we emphasize that this is just a rumor: The image supposedly relates to the first single from the album which is called "Dieelectric", or perhaps "Die Electric". The thought is that the image will continue to change until Metallica plays Bonnaroo, at which they'll play the single live for the first time. To coincide with that, there's some info that points to the idea that metclubbers will get a chance to download the single (and possibly more) when the band plays Bonnaroo on June 13th.

This, of course, is all speculation and hearsay, and should be taken with a grain of salt.

6-2-08: MASTER PUSHED BACK

The re-release date for the vinyl edition of "Master of Puppets" has been pushed back from June 17th, 2008 to July 15th, 2008, according to a report on Metallica.com.

Metallica is re-issuing their classic albums in both a single disc at 33 rpm and a deluxe two-disc edition on 180 gram vinyl, at 45 rpm. Metallica released "Kill 'em All" and "Ride the Lightning" vinyl editions in May, and has announced that "...And Justice for All" will be up next, probably in August.

6-2-08: ABSOLUTE METALLICA EDITORIAL #1

About once a month, Absolute Metallica will give readers a short recap of what's been happening in 'Tallica Land, and what's on the horizon. We'll also throw in a Blast From the Past in the form of a video or something that you might have forgotten about - or never seen before.

For our first installment, we're looking back at our first month online. We, the creators of Absolute Metallica, have held a love for the band since the mid-eighties. James, Lars, Kirk, Cliff, Jason, and Robert have laid down the soundtrack for our lives, and keeping fellow fans up to date is something that we love to do. To that end, if there's ever something that you'd like to see us do differently, or something that you really appreciate that you'd like to see more of, feel free to let us know in the Comments section of the posts on Absolute Metallica, (by the way, you don't have to be a registered anything to leave comments here - you can do so anonymously) or send us a message via the Absolute Metallica Myspace page.

In May, Mission Metallica fired up in a big way, and gave us our first concrete glimpse into the new album, (due out in September).

As we roll on through the summer, there's no doubt that the band will offer us more insights into what's what.

Something that we are REALLY looking forward to is the release of the first new single. Rumors are running wild over whether or not it will be one of the two new songs that were performed live when the band was on tour in '06, ("New Song" and "Other New Song" respectively) - though we tend to think of them as "Death is not the End" and "Vulturus".

It seems that most of the "Fly on the Wall" snippets that we've seen thus far at Mission Metallica have been from "Death is not the End" - leading us to believe that that will most likely be the first single... but who knows? Maybe we'll hear all of that "Suicide - I've already died!" song, or even the "Bow down! Sell your soul to me - I will set you free!" Whatever the first single is, we can't wait to hear it.

In the Rolling Stone interview that was done last month, James said that the band was trying to "embrace the past in the now" with the new album, leading many fans to believe that Metallica will use "Master of Puppets" as a jumping off point for what they're recording now. It's an interesting thought, and will be even more interesting to see how the boys will reinterpret, or evolve back to, a record that was made over two decades ago.

Speaking of decades ago, if you haven't listened to the 1983 show from the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio that was recently added to Metallica's Vault, give it a shot. Hearing the band play "new" songs in their set like "Creeping Death" and "Fight Fire With Fire" is a trip. Knowing the songs as well as we do now, it's strange to hear them in such a raw infancy. Of course, one of the highlights of the show is Cliff's rippage through "Pulling Teeth" - as well as the incredible bass line through "The Call of Ktulu". What a great, classic show.

There is what appears to be a pre-dated, new "Fly On The Wall" segment at Mission Metallica, (it's dated for May 28th).

This one features Lars trying to come up with a drum track for a riff we haven't heard before - it's moody and a bit slower, very Black Sabbath-y.

Metallica's new album preview site, MISSION METALLICA is now FULLY up and running, with platinum and free options.

Available to view are new recording studio pics, and new FOTW segment, (that's "Fly on the Wall" to you and me) a concert download, streaming audio of the entire "Weenie Roast" show, and much more.

Platinum users opt to have the new album delivered to them on the day it drops, as well as a digital copy downloadable on midnight of the street date.

5-22-08: MISSION CLARIFIED

The first inklings of the Mission Metallica website were via some small postcards included in the reissued vinyl editions of "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning" that were released a few months ago. Since then, Metallica fans from all over the planet have gone to the site and been told that if they signed up for the Mission Metallica experience, that they'd get a front row seat to a lot of behind the scenes action as the band puts the finishing touches on their latest album.

Okay. Cool. The site went live the day before Mother's day, and the video that introduced the site promptly froze up. Luckily, the video was already posted on youtube and elsewhere. A few days later, the site kicked in again. A couple of videos, a couple of killer contests, a "Fly on the Wall" segment...

Finally, the official site has full-on acknowledged the site's existence, and has told us when we can expect the full-on content, how we can get that content (regular or premium...), and some more specifics as to what we can expect.

The Mission Metallica website has posted two new "Winner Circle" videos.

James speaks to a couple of lucky winners at KFMA Day in Tuscon, and Kirk talks to a couple of Metal Moms at the KROQ Weenie Roast.

Also at Mission Metallica, the very first "Fly On The Wall" segment is up, featuring a riff that seems to be from the first "New Song" that was played live on June 6th, 2006 for the first time, ("...not the end, not the end, the beginning!") Go to Mission Metallica to check it all out!

As the site promised, there's now a brief video available in something called the "Winner's Circle" at Mission Metallica. In the video, the winner of the Wiltern Theater gig drawing meets Lars.

We assume that whenever someone wins one of the contests, their pic or vid will end up in the Winner's Circle. Hella cool!

5-17-08: GREAT NEW SPIN VIDS!

Spin magazine has posted both backstage and on-stage video of Metallica's performance at the Wiltern Theater. (Check it out HERE).

They also caught up with Lars before the show and asked him about his thoughts on kids and music, (seeing as the show was a benefit for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music). Hear Lars speak HERE.

5-16-08: TWO BRAND NEW INTERVIEWS

Two brand new interviews popped up on the internet yesterday.

The first was one that Lars did with Spin magazine via a press conference for the Bonnaroo Festival, which Metallica will be playing at this summer. Lars says that the album is just about done, and that it will drop sometime in September. He also says that the band's "graphic designer" will be working with the band soon to finalize the new album cover.

The second interview is one that James did with Rolling Stone following the Wiltern Theater gig. In the interview, James talks about how Master of Puppets was kind of a starting point for the mentality of the new record. He talks about what it's like working with Rick Rubin, and about the direction the band wanted to go in after St. Anger.

Metallica played a benefit concert for Flea's (RHCP's bassist) Silverlake Conservatory of Music at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles last night.

Pictures are popping up all over - Getty Images and Film Magic have some great on-stage shots.

More pictures were posted by Photographer Ross Halfin on his official site's diary, (who managed to snag some backstage shots of James and Flea).

The Mission: Metallica "Let it Be Written Let it Be Done" trailer - which includes a montage of Metallica's music interspersed with facts about the band - has been making the rounds on Youtube for the last few days, and has now finally been added to the player on MISSION: METALLICA. 5-13-08: METALLICA TO PLAY OZZFEST!

The official Ozzfest site, as well as metallica.com confirms the rumors!

Metallica will join a jampacked lineup - including Serj, Hellyeah, Cavalara Conspiracy, Apocalyptica, and Ozzy himself - in Dallas, Texas on August 9th, 2008.
