3-24-14: METALLICA RECORDS TRACK FOR DIO ALBUM

Metallica announced today that they have recorded a track for the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album, Ronnie James Dio: This is Your Life.

Joining Anthrax, Tenacious D, Motorhead, Rob Halford, and a slew of other acts on the tribute album, Metallica cites both Dio's Black Sabbath-era and solo work as a major influence on their sound.

Putting together a compilation entitled Ronnie Rising Medley, Metallica's nine minute track includes sections of four different Dio songs: A Light in the Black, Tarot Woman, Stargazer, and Kill the King. Performing medleys is not new to Metallica. For 1998's Garage Inc. cover album, the band knitted together five separate Mercyful Fate songs into an eleven minute, heavy metal odyssey.

Ronnie James Dio, the frontman for Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and Dio, sold over 47 million albums in the course of his career. He succumbed to stomach cancer in 2010. Proceeds from Ronnie James Dio: This is Your Life will benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.

The tribute album will be released on March 31st.

The Rolling Stone website is currently the only avenue online to hear the new Metallica track. Check it out here.
